Simon was one of the most successful and prolific American playwrights of the 20th century, author of The Odd Couple, Barefoot in the Park and the autobiographical Brighton Beach trilogy, and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Lost in Yonkers. His comedies of urban Jewish life defined Broadway for decades. He grew up in a Jewish family in the Bronx.
