Nehemiah was a Judean official at the Persian court of Susa who around 445 BCE was appointed governor of Judea and led the rapid rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem. Together with Ezra he reorganised the returning Jewish community, enforced observance of the Torah and Sabbath, and addressed social and economic reforms. He was a devout Jew of the post-exilic period whose memoir forms the biblical Book of Nehemiah.
