Nathanael West (born Nathan Weinstein) was an American novelist and satirist whose short, dark works 'Miss Lonelyhearts' and 'The Day of the Locust' became classics of American literature, the latter a mordant portrait of Hollywood. He was Jewish, born into a family of Lithuanian-Jewish immigrants; he died in a car crash at the age of 37.
