How & why

Dame Myra Hess (born to a Jewish family) was a British classical pianist celebrated for her interpretations of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann. During the Second World War she organized and performed in the daily National Gallery concerts in London, sustaining public morale during the Blitz, for which she was made a Dame. Her piano transcription of Bach's 'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring' remains widely played.
