How & why

Prinstein was a Polish-born American track athlete who won four Olympic gold medals in the long jump and triple jump between 1900 and 1906 and held the long jump world record. Famously, Syracuse officials barred him from the 1900 long jump final held on a Sunday, though he was Jewish, and he won gold in the triple jump the next day. He was Jewish, raised in Syracuse after his family emigrated from the Russian Empire.
