How & why
The Galeries Lafayette department-store dynasty was founded in Paris in 1893 by Theophile Bader and Alphonse Kahn, cousins from Jewish families in Alsace, and later built up by their relatives (including the Meyer and Moulin lines). The founding families were Alsatian Jews, and the business was 'Aryanized' and seized during the Vichy years before being restored after the war.
