Mary Ann Magnin is recognized among Jewish contributors to Economics & Business — Founder of I. Magnin (San Francisco, 1876), the West Coast's temple of high fashion, begun with hand-sewn baby clothes.
Born Mary Ann Cohen in the Dutch fishing town of Scheveningen, she married Isaac Magnin in London and crossed to San Francisco in 1875. While her husband carved and gilded, she sewed: lace-trimmed baby clothes, lingerie, bridal trousseaux, sold from a small shop that grew into I. Magnin & Company — named for Isaac, run by Mary Ann. She drilled the business into her eight children, put quality above everything, and built the West Coast's temple of high fashion: the store where generations of Californian women bought their wedding dresses. The Jewish Women's Archive counts her among the great merchant founders of America.
