Mark Ratner was a theoretical chemist at Northwestern University regarded as a father of molecular electronics, having proposed with Arieh Aviram in 1974 the first design for a single-molecule electronic rectifier. His work opened the field of using individual molecules as circuit components. He was born to a Jewish family in Cleveland.
