Marcus Goldman was a German-born banker who emigrated to the United States and in 1869 founded the firm that became Goldman Sachs, pioneering the trading of commercial paper in New York. His son-in-law Samuel Sachs later joined, giving the firm its enduring name. He was Jewish, born to a Jewish family in Bavaria.
