Mauss was a founding figure of French anthropology whose 1925 essay The Gift analyzed reciprocity and gift-exchange as a total social phenomenon, deeply influencing anthropology and sociology. He came from an Orthodox Jewish family in Épinal and was the nephew and collaborator of sociologist Émile Durkheim. His work remains foundational to social theory.
