How & why

Manfred Joshua Sakel was an Austrian-American neurophysiologist and psychiatrist who developed insulin shock therapy for schizophrenia in the 1920s and 1930s, a treatment that spread worldwide before newer therapies replaced it. Trained in Vienna, he worked in Berlin and, after fleeing the Nazis, at Harlem Valley State Hospital in New York. He was born to a Jewish family. (His surname is usually spelled 'Sakel'.)
