Clynes was a neurophysiologist, inventor and pianist who, with Nathan Kline in a 1960 NASA-linked paper, coined the term 'cyborg' to describe a self-regulating human-machine system adapted for spaceflight. He later developed the CAT computer for physiological measurement and a theory of emotional expression he called 'sentics.' Born to a Jewish family in Vienna, he fled the Nazi annexation of Austria, reaching Australia before settling in the United States.
