How & why

Magnus Hirschfeld was a German physician and sexologist who pioneered the scientific study of human sexuality and gender, founding the Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin in 1919 and campaigning for the decriminalization of homosexuality. His institute's library was among the first targets of Nazi book burnings in 1933, forcing him into exile. Hirschfeld was Jewish, born to a Jewish family in Kolberg.
