Louis Wirth was a German-born American sociologist of the Chicago School and a pioneer of urban sociology, best known for the essay 'Urbanism as a Way of Life' (1938), which theorized how city size, density and heterogeneity shape social relations. He also studied minority groups and the ghetto. He was born into a Jewish family in Germany and emigrated to the United States as a teenager.
