How & why
Born Lionel Begleiter to a Jewish immigrant family from Galicia in London's East End, Bart became the leading British musical-theatre songwriter of his era. His 1960 musical 'Oliver!', for which he wrote book, music and lyrics, won a Tony Award and became a globally beloved show and film. He also wrote hit songs for the early British pop scene.
