Biography

Lili Kraus is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Classical pianist

How & why

Lili Kraus, born in Budapest to an assimilated Jewish mother, was a Hungarian-born pianist who studied with Bartók and Kodály and became a celebrated interpreter of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. Interned by the Japanese during World War II and cut off from a piano for over three years, she resumed her career after the war and later settled in the United States. Her Mozart cycles remain landmark recordings of the classical repertoire.
