Lila Gleitman

Gleitman was a psycholinguist at the University of Pennsylvania who transformed understanding of how children learn the meanings of words, showing that syntax itself gives crucial cues to meaning (the theory of 'syntactic bootstrapping'). Her work reshaped developmental psychology and cognitive science. She was of Jewish background and married the German-Jewish refugee psychologist Henry Gleitman.
