Levi Eshkol was the third Prime Minister of Israel, in office from June 1963 until his death in February 1969. Before that he built much of the country's water infrastructure, directing the Mekorot water company from its founding in 1937 until 1951, and he chaired the Jewish Agency's Settlement Department from 1948 to 1963, settling waves of new immigrants on the land. As Prime Minister and Defence Minister he formed a national unity government during the crisis of May 1967 and led Israel through the Six-Day War that June. He died of a heart attack in Jerusalem while still in office.
