Freund is regarded as a founder of medical radiotherapy and dermatological radiology; in 1896 he became the first physician to treat a patient therapeutically with X-rays, publishing the first textbook of radiotherapy. He was born into a Jewish family in Bohemia and, after the Nazi annexation of Austria, fled to Belgium where he died during the war.
