Goldenson built ABC into a competitive third national television network after merging it with United Paramount Theatres in 1953, pioneering programming that reshaped American broadcasting. He was born to a Jewish family in the small town of Scottdale, Pennsylvania, and trained as a lawyer at Harvard. He also co-founded the United Cerebral Palsy charity.
