Leo Hurvich was an American psychologist who, with his wife and collaborator Dorothea Jameson, revived and quantified the opponent-process theory of color vision. Their hue-cancellation experiments provided decisive evidence that the visual system encodes color in red-green and blue-yellow opponent channels, a cornerstone of modern color science. Hurvich was Jewish and spent much of his career at the University of Pennsylvania.
