Edeleanu, a Romanian Jewish chemist, was in 1887 the first to synthesize amphetamine (then called phenylisopropylamine), decades before its stimulant properties were recognized. He is best known for the Edeleanu process, the first large-scale method to refine petroleum using liquid sulfur dioxide to remove aromatic impurities, still foundational to modern refining. He worked in Germany and Romania and helped found the country's petroleum industry.
