How & why

Kurt Adler was an Austrian-American conductor and chorus master best known for his roughly three-decade tenure at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he served as chorus master and conductor from the 1940s to 1973. A Jew who fled Nazi persecution in 1938, he trained as a conductor in 1920s Vienna and became an authority on the art of accompanying. He is distinct from the San Francisco Opera's Kurt Herbert Adler.
