Karl Herzfeld is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physicist; physical chemistry and molecular acoustics
Herzfeld was an Austrian-American physicist and physical chemist who did pioneering work on the statistical mechanics of matter and, with Karl Rice, founded the modern theory of the absorption and dispersion of sound in gases (molecular acoustics). He came from a recently assimilated Viennese Jewish family; his parents had him baptized and he was a lifelong Catholic. He emigrated to the United States in 1926 and long chaired the physics department at the Catholic University of America.
