Julius Pokorny is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — Celtic linguist, author of a major Indo-European etymological dictionary.
Julius Pokorny was a Celtic scholar and Indo-Europeanist whose 'Indogermanisches etymologisches Wörterbuch' remains a standard reference for reconstructing the Indo-European lexicon; he also championed the Irish language and Irish nationalism. A Catholic by upbringing, he lost his Berlin chair in 1935 when the Nazis determined that all four of his grandparents were Jewish, and he spent his later career in Switzerland. His Jewish ancestry is thus documented.
