Julius Katchen was an American concert pianist admired for his commanding technique and above all for his complete recordings of the solo piano music of Brahms, still regarded as a benchmark. Based mainly in Paris, he enjoyed a major European concert career until his early death at 42. Katchen was Jewish, born to a Jewish family in Long Branch, New Jersey.
