Biography

Judy Blume is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Author of Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret and Forever; wrote frankly for adolescents about bodies, doubt and faith, and spent decades fighting the banning of books

How & why

Judy Blume was born Judith Sussman into a Jewish family in New Jersey, an upbringing she describes as cultural rather than religious. Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret (1970) let an eleven-year-old speak plainly about menstruation, belief and the awkwardness of being between things; her books have sold more than 90 million copies and are also among the most frequently banned in American schools, which is why she has campaigned against censorship for forty years.
