How & why

Woldin was an American composer and jazz pianist best known for the score of Raisin, the musical adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, which won the 1974 Tony Award for Best Musical. Trained through the BMI musical-theatre workshop, he wrote its music with lyricist Robert Brittan. He was Jewish, from an American Jewish family.
