Origins and early life
Joshua Thomas Radnor was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1974 to Carol Hirsch, a school counsellor, and Alan Radnor, a lawyer, and was raised in Conservative Judaism in Bexley: he attended the Columbus Torah Academy, an Orthodox Jewish day school, and had his bar mitzvah at Congregation Tifereth Israel.
Work and career
He read drama at Kenyon College, spent a season in Tzfat in 1997 on a programme run by Livnot U'Lehibanot, and took an MFA in acting at New York University. From 2005 to 2014 he played Ted Mosby across 208 episodes of How I Met Your Mother. He also writes and directs: happythankyoumoreplease (2010) won the audience award at Sundance, and Liberal Arts followed in 2012.
Recognition
On stage he has appeared in The Graduate (2002), She Loves Me (2011) and Disgraced (2014), and in 2024 he took the lead in Itamar Moses's The Ally at the Public Theater — a Jewish professor asked to sign a student manifesto against police violence who stops at a line about Israel, and watches that hesitation pull apart every part of his life; the play was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for drama. On television he has since been seen in Mercy Street, Rise, Fleishman Is in Trouble and Hunters, the series about a group tracking down Nazis hidden in 1970s New York. With the Australian musician Ben Lee he forms the duo Radnor and Lee, which has released two albums.
