How & why

Jonathan Miller trained as a doctor in neurology, then joined Peter Cook, Dudley Moore and Alan Bennett in 'Beyond the Fringe' (1960), the revue that opened the British satire boom. He went on to direct more than fifty operas across four decades — his 'Rigoletto' relocated to 1950s Little Italy became famous — and presented the BBC series 'The Body in Question' and 'Atheism: A Rough History of Disbelief'. He grew up in St John's Wood in a well-connected Jewish family; his father Emanuel, a psychiatrist, was of Lithuanian Jewish descent.
