Jonathan Israel is a British historian, professor emeritus at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, best known for his monumental studies of the 'Radical Enlightenment' and of Spinoza's democratic and egalitarian political thought. Born into an English Jewish family, he is himself Jewish and has also written extensively on the history of European Jewry. His work argues that a radical, secularizing strand of the Enlightenment laid the intellectual groundwork for modern democracy.
