Origins and early life
Joel H. Cohen was born in Calgary, Alberta, into the Jewish family of that city whose elder son, his brother Robert Cohen, is recorded as born to a Jewish family in Calgary and as having attended the Calgary Hebrew School; the brothers share those parents, and Robert wrote for The Simpsons a decade before Joel did. He took a science degree at the University of Alberta in 1988 and an MBA at the Schulich School of Business in 1992 before going into comedy writing, worked on Saturday Night Live and Suddenly Susan, and joined The Simpsons in 2001, where he has written more than thirty episodes across a quarter of a century and risen to co-executive producer.
Work and career
He has won a Primetime Emmy Award for the series and was a script consultant on The Simpsons Movie. His most Jewish episode is Today I Am a Clown, broadcast on 7 December 2003, in which Krusty the Clown discovers that he was never given a bar mitzvah and sets out, as a grown man, to have one; Jackie Mason returned as Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky, the part he had first voiced twelve years earlier. The episode is the direct sequel, across two generations of writers, to the 1991 episode that first made Krusty Jewish. Outside television he has published How to Lose a Marathon, an account of his own running, in 2017.
