Jerome Kohlberg Jr. was an American businessman and investor from a Jewish family, widely regarded as a founding figure of the modern private-equity and leveraged-buyout industry. In 1976 he co-founded KKR with Henry Kravis and George Roberts before leaving to establish his own firm, Kohlberg & Co., in 1987. He was also a committed philanthropist and advocate for campaign-finance reform.
