Jeanne Hersch was a Swiss philosopher of existentialism and a leading defender of human rights, who directed UNESCO's philosophy division and edited the anthology Birthright of Man. A student of Karl Jaspers, she taught at the University of Geneva and argued that human freedom is the foundation of dignity. She was born to Jewish immigrant parents from Poland and Lithuania.
