Jared Diamond is an American geographer, physiologist and anthropologist whose 1997 book 'Guns, Germs, and Steel' argued that geography and biogeography, rather than innate differences, explain why some societies developed faster than others; it won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize. Trained in physiology, he became a leading synthesizer of history, ecology and evolution for a wide public. He was born into an Ashkenazi Jewish family, the son of a physician and a musician-teacher.
