Janusz Korczak (Henryk Goldszmit) was a Polish Jewish pediatrician, educator and writer who pioneered the idea of children's rights, articulating a charter of the child's dignity long before it entered international law. He ran an orphanage in Warsaw and refused offers of freedom, choosing to accompany the Jewish children in his care to their deaths at Treblinka in 1942. His writings later helped inspire the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
