Izaak Maurits Kolthoff was a Dutch-American chemist widely regarded as a father of modern analytical chemistry, transforming it from an empirical art into a quantitative, theory-based science; his wartime work also aided synthetic-rubber production. Born into a Jewish family in Almelo, he spent his long career at the University of Minnesota. He trained a generation of leading analytical chemists.
