Isaac Luria is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — Foremost kabbalist, founder of Lurianic Kabbalah
Isaac Luria, known as the Ari ('the Lion'), was the foremost kabbalist of Safed and the founder of Lurianic Kabbalah, the mystical system that came to dominate later Jewish mysticism. His teachings on tzimtzum (divine contraction), the shattering of the vessels and tikkun (cosmic repair) reshaped Jewish theology and liturgy. Though he died young, his ideas were transmitted through his disciple Chaim Vital and spread across the Jewish world.
