Isaac Karabtchevsky is a leading Brazilian conductor who led the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra for nearly three decades and later the Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra and Venice's Teatro La Fenice, and is regarded as one of the living icons of Brazilian music. He was born in São Paulo and is of Russian-Jewish ancestry. He has championed Brazilian composers such as Villa-Lobos internationally.
