Isaac Djerassi was a Bulgarian-born American oncologist who pioneered platelet and white-blood-cell transfusions and developed high-dose methotrexate with citrovorum ('leucovorin') rescue, techniques that made aggressive cancer chemotherapy far safer and saved many patients. He received the Lasker Award in 1972. He was Jewish, born to a Sephardic Jewish family in Sofia.
