Isaac Carasso was a Sephardic Jew from Salonika who founded the yogurt company Danone in Barcelona in 1919, naming it after his son Daniel ('Danon'). Having seen children suffer from intestinal ailments, he industrialized yogurt production using Bulgarian ferments studied at the Pasteur Institute, first selling it in pharmacies as a health product. His firm grew into one of the world's largest food companies. He belonged to the Sephardic Jewish community of Thessaloniki.
