Irving Thalberg was born in Brooklyn to German Jewish immigrant parents and had a heart condition that his doctors said would kill him before thirty. He ran production at Universal at twenty and at MGM from 1924, shaping Grand Hotel, Mutiny on the Bounty and The Good Earth and inventing the practice of previewing and re-editing a film before release. He died at thirty-seven; the Academy created the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in his honour the following year.
