Irving Howe was an American literary and social critic and a leading democratic-socialist intellectual, whose National Book Award-winning World of Our Fathers (1976) chronicled the world of Jewish immigrants on New York's Lower East Side. Born to Yiddish-speaking Jewish immigrants in the Bronx, he founded the journal Dissent. He was among the most cited humanities scholars of his era.
