Herman Chernoff was an American applied mathematician and statistician known for the Chernoff bound, a fundamental exponential tail inequality widely used in probability, statistics and computer science, and for 'Chernoff faces', a method of visualizing multivariate data. He was Jewish, the son of Jewish immigrants, and taught at Stanford, MIT and Harvard.
