Fields was a prolific Broadway librettist who wrote the books for many Rodgers and Hart musicals of the 1920s–30s and, with his sister Dorothy Fields, for Cole Porter's Something for the Boys and Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun. His final show, Redhead, won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1959. He was the son of the Jewish vaudeville star Lew Fields (born Moses Schoenfeld).
