Origins and early life
Henri Philippe Moïse Monteux was born in the ninth arrondissement of Paris in 1874 and died on 12 April 1943 in the concentration camp of Oranienburg-Sachsenhausen, where, as the record states, he had been deported because of his Jewish origins. He belonged to a family of musicians: his brothers were the conductors Paul Monteux-Brisac, who lived from 1862 to 1928, and Pierre Monteux, born in 1875 and dead in 1964, who conducted the first performance of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring in 1913 and later led orchestras in Boston, Amsterdam and San Francisco.
Work and career
He himself took the first prize in tragedy at the Paris Conservatoire in 1895, and he played on the great Paris stages from 1894 to 1938. He appeared in the cinema between 1913 and 1939, notably in L'Équipage in 1928. He was made an officier d'Académie in 1905. He had been on the stage for forty years when the occupation put an end to his career and then to his life, and his name belongs on the list of French actors murdered because they were Jews.
