Deutsch was a Jewish American screenwriter and lyricist best known for adapting 'National Velvet' (1944) and for writing 'Lili' (1953), for which she was Oscar-nominated and wrote the hit song 'Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo'. A rare woman screenwriter in the studio era, she began as a theatre publicist and drama critic. She was born to a Jewish family in New York City.
