Markus (Hazel Rose Markus) is a Stanford social psychologist and a founder of cultural psychology, known for the concept of the self-schema, of 'possible selves', and for the distinction between independent and interdependent selves that shows how cultures and minds shape each other. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. She was born in London to a Jewish-American father and a British-Catholic mother, and thus has documented paternal Jewish ancestry.
