Harvey Pekar, born in Cleveland to a Jewish family, spent his working life as a file clerk at the Veterans Administration hospital — and turned that life into literature. From 1976 he wrote American Splendor, autobiographical comics about buses, jobs, illness and small victories, drawn by friends including R. Crumb. The series won the American Book Award in 1987; the 2003 film adaptation won at Sundance and Cannes. Our Cancer Year, written with his wife Joyce Brabner, chronicled his lymphoma. Pekar proved that comics could carry an unglamorous, truthful, ordinary life — and the medium grew around the proof.
