How & why

Bloom was one of the most influential American literary critics of his era, best known for The Anxiety of Influence (1973), which theorized how poets struggle against their predecessors, and for the best-selling The Western Canon (1994). He taught at Yale for more than half a century. He was born into an Orthodox Jewish family in the Bronx and grew up speaking Yiddish.
